When you purchase this you get a to choose the colors that you want the board to be painted.  I painted my board black then I put on a red coat of paint let it dry.  Then we placed the vinyl on it and the last step is that you paint the top coat which I did a pink color.

Once it is dry then you peal off the vinyl and with sandpaper you sand the board to give it a unique look.

Fall foods that Healthy Eating

Fall is a great time to eat the vegetables that you have grown in your garden. Your garden has produced nutrient rich root veggies. The fruit trees are filled with crisp fruits.

With the hot sticky summer behind us we now can enjoy some of the fall veggies that we have grown in our gardens.

Lets talk about the 7 healthy fall foods.

1.  Pumpkins are full of fiber and Vitamin A, which helps stimulates white blood cell activity and regulates cell growth.

2.  Pumpkin Seeds are rich in healthy fat and oils.

3.  Apples are high in fiber.  They also have several vitamins, including A & C.  Also make sure that you wash them really good if you are buying them from the store.

4.  Persimmons are a good source of Vitamin C, as well as manganese, potassium, and calcium.  When you are looking to pick a Persimmons you are wanting them to be really ripe and soft.  They come into season late in October until November.  If you have picked a Persimmons and you bit into it and it tastes like chalk then it is not fully ripe.

5.  Pomegranates are the jewel of autumn. The pulp surrounding the seeds are high in antioxidants, they are also a good source of fiber, potassium and vitamin C.

6.  This is why we love beets.  Actually, root veggies of all kinds, including carrots, turnips and rutabaga, are real nutritional stars in the fall and winter. Bright, tasty beets are jam-packed with folate, vitamin C and magnesium.

7.  Brussels Sprouts are really popular with Thanksgiving dinner. They are also a good source of fiber and foliate high in vitamin C.  They are also a cousin to broccoli.

Over the next few day I will be posting recipes that you can incorporate these 7 fall foods into your meals.

Pole Green Beans | Square foot garden

Every year my parents do a garden.  Last year was the first year that they grew pole beans. This is my first year that I have grown pole green Beans.  I planted my Green beans before they planted theirs.

On July 16th my youngest son Logan wanted to go and spend two weeks with my parents that live in Idaho. It is funny how I compare my garden to their garden.  Are tomato plants were about the same as their tomatoes, but the rest of their garden was so much better than my garden.

My parents pole green beans were almost to the top of the trellis that my dad made.  Mine are just starting to climb up my trellis.

These are my dad pole beans

These are mine!

We are starting to climb up the trellis.

As you can see from the pictures that my dad pole green beans are doing a lot better than mine.  As the month of August continues my green beans will grow up to the top of the trellis that my dad helped me with.

Tomato plant disease

What do you do with Tomato plant disease?  Fist you have to determine what kind of disease your tomato plants have.

Fungal Disease

Virus borne disease

dealing with insects

or environmental problems

Over the past few weeks the weather in Utah has been nice and warm.  My tomato plants are loving the warmth of the sun and are growing nice.  Then I saw that my tomato plants had tomato’s on them and I was getting excited until I noticed the bottom of them were black.  I knew immediately that they needed calcium.

I ran down to IFA and bought some root blossom and sprayed on my tomatoes to give them the calcium that they needed. I also picked off all of my tomato’s that had this problem.  I was lucky that I only had one tomato plant that had this problem so far.

So over the next next few weeks I will add my egg shells to the plant where they will intake the water.

My poor tomato, just when I thought that I had this gardening down and, I now realize that gardening is a learning experience every year.

container gardening vegetables

Over the past several years I have grown my container gardening vegetables.  My dog Xena has done fairly good at not getting into my garden last year.  This year is a different story.  I have blogged about watching someone dog for a month well that month turned into 6 months.  Then the owner of Teva came to pick her up.  We let her go and then Xena was sad so we decided to get another dog.  Well we got new dogs that were sisters. These two dogs have been the handfull.

They have dug up all my peppers plants which I will not replant this year.  They have ran over my beautiful potato plants.  I have noticed that they are producing new plants, which you will see in the below picture.

look at what is growing after the dogs have destroyed it. I am alive!

With my container gardening I have learned that I need to put a fence around it so that the dogs don’t destroy it.

We have survived the dog running all over our plants!

As I noticed that my potato plants were dying I decided to dig up some of the potatoes and this is how big my red potatoes are.  I have also decided to continue to water the potato plants to see what will happen and I noticed that they are starting to grow new leaves, we will see what happens to my potato plants at the end of summer.

Keep coming back to see what the results of my potato plants will be at the end of summer.

Square-foot-garden-carrots-potatoes

Last week I posted about pole green beans. As you can see from my garden that my pole green beans are growing.  I can not wait to see them start to grow up the panel.

When growing potatoes the soil is a important part of the success of their growing.  Last year my soil was not very good so my potatoes were small and misshaped.

As you potatoes are growing you will want to feed them  a liquid fertilizer every two weeks, sparingly during the vegetative stage, up to blooming time. Once the blooms are out, STOP fertilizing. You would be wise to mark each hill as you plant, because as the flowers droop, the foliage on the plant will begin to waste away, because all the good is now going to the potatoes developing spuds!

This is my first year on growing carrots.  It has been fun to watch them come up and I am excited to see how them come out.

Pole Green Beans

green-beans-square-foot-gardenLast year my dad grew pole green beans on a trellis.  He went to IFA and bought fence posts and fence panels that were 8 feet wide and 16 feet long and had them cut to 4 feet wide and 16 fee long.  Then he planted his pole green beans and they grew all the way to the top of his trellis.

In the spring my dad came down to help me set up my trellis.  I went to my local IFA store and bought the same fence poles and fence panels that my dad had used in his garden. He also helped my make my square foot box.  I have 3 fence posts and two 4 foot wide fence panels that are 16 feet high, and my square foot box is 8 feet long by 2 feet wide.

When you are planting your pole green beans the weather needs to be 60 degrees.  I planted my pole green beans about 3 weeks ago, then in UT we got a lot of cold rain weather so it took them a little longer to start to come up.  When planting pole green beans you want to space them 4 to 6 inches apart.  When I planted mine I spaced my as close together as I could.
